Summer Reading

Saint Agnes Catholic School

June, 2011

 +Dear Parents,

It’s that time again!  Summer is just around the corner and you are busy making plans for vacation, camp, activities,. . . and summer reading.  You will see that this year each grade has paired down the required and suggested books to just a few.  Each grade has at least one book that is related to math.  Each grade has required activities for the students to complete.

The math emphasis is a reflection of our FAME (Foundation to Achieve Mathematics Excellence) connection this year where the teachers spent the year learning about algebraic thinking and how to incorporate algebraic thinking into everyday math.   There are so many literature selections with math connections.  I hope your child will make the math connections and share them with you!

I hope that you and your family will take the time to make reading for pleasure a part of every day.  To me, that is what vacation is all about – relaxing in a cool place with a good book. Bring it on!

n a recent article in Instructor magazine, it was suggested that parents have an important role in summer reading.  Parents can: encourage children to read over breakfast, match books to activities, always carry a book, have family reading time, and set individual goals.

Of course, if you are not going to borrow the books from the library or find them at a second-hand book store, you might consider purchasing them at our Barnes & Noble Book Fair at Main Street in Exton from June 13 – 15.  The book fair is a great place to find a huge selection of books to enjoy for kids of every age.  Might I suggest that before you go shopping at Barnes & Noble, that you first shop for SCRIP?  In that way you will support the school and your family.  A portion of your purchases at B & N will be returned to the school library for books.  Your SCRIP purchase will help the school and will result in a tuition reduction for your family.

Summer reading assignments should be brought to school on the first day for students in grades 1 – 8.  I would highly recommend that the reading be completed as soon as possible when school is over so you don’t get caught at the end.  That might not happen to you, but it sure has happened to me.

May you and your family take many journeys this summer!  Journey through time or journey to foreign places; journey back in history, or journey to the future, learn about history, geography, sports, or animals.  Enjoy a journey through a good book!

God love and bless you and your family this summer.

Sincerely,

Sister Joan Felicia, IHM
